For the uninitiated, the SmartCommute Challenge is an annual campaign we have here in the Triangle to raise awareness about how our driving habits impact our area’s air quality and traffic congestion. The Challenge is pretty simple– we want you to try an alternative commute from September 1 through October 15. Alternative commuting = not driving alone to work or campus. Think riding the bus, carpooling, vanpooling, teleworking, biking or walking. If you already SmartCommute, great! You’re still eligible for prizes, but please take the opportunity to spread the word and get your solo-driving friends to refresh their commute.
We’re throwing a party to kick off this year’s Challenge on September 7 and you’re invited! Just RSVP here before August 31.
And the fun doesn’t stop there! Of course, you’re going to save yourself some money and stress by completing the Challenge, but we’ve seen fit to find some excellent prizes to sweeten the deal (you’ll have to wait until September 1 to find out what they are!). One thing I can reveal–this year you’ll have even more chances to win with our Weekly Challenges! Every Monday starts a new workweek and a new challenge.
As a GoTriangle blog reader, you’re getting the jump on the game, so get ready! Here’s what we’ve got planned:
Pedal vs. Metal (September 10 – 16) If you are an active commuter, this is a mile for mile Challenge. Track your trips and see how many miles you can save during the week by walking, biking, or skateboarding your daily commutes and other trips. The commuter with the most miles saved, wins!
Try Transit Week (September 17 -23) Calling all transit riders! We’re taking the classic road trip game, “I Spy” and bringing it to your daily commute. Find all of the GoSmart piggy banks around the Triangle. The GoSmart piggy bank may be on your bus, at the Regional Transit Center, Durham Station, Moore Square, or online. Make sure you follow GoTriangle on our social networks for your chance to see the GoSmart piggy bank. Email us the full list of piggy bank locations to enter for a chance to win. The person who finds the most pigs wins!
PARKing Week (September 24 – 30)
If you rideshare, you have a free parking space at work. Show us what you would do with your free parking space. Turn it into a park. Put up a lemonade stand. Be as creative as you can. Please upload your photos using Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Google+, or Instagram. If you don’t have any of these social media accounts, feel free to join them or send your submission(s) to email@example.com. The best parking space creation wins!
Battle of the Brains (October 1 – 15)
Tarheels! Devils! Eagles! Pack! Time to rep your school. Employees and students alike, join together and GoSmart. You’ve got two weeks to log your trips. The school with the most miles saved and CO2 reduced will be the smartest school in the Triangle. This is a ranking you don’t want to miss!
