#SCC2012 KickOff– An afFAIR to remember!

Who doesn’t like a good theme? We sure do, so this year we decided to turn our kickoff for the 2012 SmartCommute Challenge into a carnival, complete with fresh popcorn, pretzels, a sundae bar, and games.

  3. Our keynote speaker, Steve Hinkle, shared his thoughts on bike commuting with the crowd. Hinkle, a campus chaplain at Duke, has a unique perspective on the subject. He traded in his 1992 Toyota Corolla for a fancy commuter bike at the 2011 Tour de Fat. The event was sponsored by the New Belgium Brewing Co. Steve’s agreement with the environmentally-friendly brewery meant he couldn’t drive a car for a year. Read more about Steve’s experience in this profile from the @newsobserver.

  8. Of course, it wasn’t all fun and games… wait. Yes, it was!

  9. @RaleighRides played the part of Bob Barker (err…Drew Carey?) as she invited our guests to take a spin on the “Squeal of Fortune.” Players spun the bike wheel to see how many raffle tickets were up for grabs if they answered our SmartCommute trivia questions correctly.

  12. Our version of Angry Birds let our fairgoers take aim at traffic congestion, rising gas prices, and diminished air quality. Each player was given 5 of our squishy Stress Pigs and told to knock down the blocks on the table. Each box that fell earned the contestant a ticket for the raffle we had at the end of the event.

  14. Not into flying pigs or spinning tires? We also had a “Words with (Rideshare) Friends” table. We challenged participants to play a game of Scrabble and use words associated with SmartCommuting. Have you looked for a new carpool friend at
